        Why Bible Translation?

Wycliffe Bible Translators was started by a young man named Cameron “Uncle Cam” Townsend, who took a job selling Spanish Bibles in Guatemala in 1917. He quickly realized that there were many minority language groups in the country that did not understand Spanish, and that a translation in their own language was needed. One local asked him, “Why doesn’t your God speak my language?” His heart was captured by the vision of Bible translation--so that all will hear--and went on to found Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Why not English or French or Spanish or Swahili?

“God wen get so plenny love an aloha fo da peopo inside da world, dat he wen send me, his one an ony Boy, so dat everybody dat trus me no get cut off from God, but get da real kine life dat stay to da max foeva.”

This is an actual translation of John 3:16, in a Pidgin language. You might recognize a few words and maybe you even recognized which verse it is. But could you really understand it? Millions of Christians have to use a Bible that is not clearly understood, one that doesn’t speak to their heart. To millions, God is foreign.

Vision 2025: The Mission

The numbers are astonishing. There are over 6,900* languages in the world, but only slightly more than 400 complete Bibles. Thousands of language projects are in progress, but there are still about 2,600 languages that don’t even have a project started. Wycliffe has taken on the mission to: see a Bible translation program in progress in every language still needing one by 2025. This is called Vision 2025 and has become the driving force behind Wycliffe. Since 1999, when this vision was adopted, Wycliffe and our partners have seen the greatest acceleration of new Bible translation programs than at any other time in history. The amazing thing is that God has called us to join Him in this effort.
