Why Bible Translation? Wycliffe Bible Translators was started by a young man named Cameron “Uncle Cam” Townsend, who took a job selling Spanish Bibles in Guatemala in 1917. He quickly realized that there were many minority language groups in the country that did not understand Spanish, and that a translation in their own language was needed. One local asked him, “Why doesn’t your God speak my language?” His heart was captured by the vision of Bible translation--so that all will hear--and went on to found Wycliffe Bible Translators. Why not English or French or Spanish or Swahili? “God wen get so plenny love an aloha fo da peopo inside da world, dat he wen send me, his one an ony Boy, so dat everybody dat trus me no get cut off from God, but get da real kine life dat stay to da max foeva.” This is an actual translation of John 3:16, in a Pidgin language. You might recognize a few words and maybe you even recognized which verse it is. But could you really understand it? Millions of Christians have to use a Bible that is not clearly understood, one that doesn’t speak to their heart. To millions, God is foreign.
